Quick excercise

What is the purpose of the head?

The use of the head is to seal the combustion chamber.  It is used to allow the pistons to work by using very specific timings of valves opening and closing.  It allows the four steps of the internal combustion engine to work.  the crank shaft in the block is connected to the cam shafts in the head to work together.

What have I learned?

I learned that the head is made of a different alloy.  It is made of aluminium and the block is made out of a cast iron.  I did not know that the heat in the head is enough to warp the head.  It is also hot enough to expand the length of the valve stems.  A special tool called a feeler gauge can be useful when checking seals,  in this case we learned how to use the feeler gauge to check if the surface of the head was not warped.
