Wheel Bearings

You may notice during an inspection for a warrant of fitness or a wheel alignment that a wheel bearing has worn out.  You'll hear a grinding noise when you spin the wheel and feel a vibration on the strut.  They are fairly easy to change, requires some hammering and such and such....

  1. First remove the brakes;  I think I have covered this.  If not, remove the brake callipers, theres four bolts that hold it all together;
  2. remove brake disc
  3. Remove the hub, depending on what type of suspension set up it is, you will need to remove the ball joints, strut bolts, tie rod end, ABS sensor.
  4. Vice the hub assembly.  The goal here is to wack the bearing out of the hub which sits inside.

old bearing vs. new bearing

This is a 4WD Subaru.  This has a drive shaft that sits in the hub assembly.  All cars are different but have the same idea.

Be careful with the ABS components, they can break very easily!
Now the bearing needs to be pressed into the hub assembly with a hydraulic press.  Just place the bearing on the hub assembly and press.  Use old bearings to align the parts together to be pressed.

Put everything back together and voila!
