Health & Safety

multipurpose workshop, all students must be aware of all hazards, not just in the automotive department.
burning - many flammable substances and gases to be working with, including battery acid, petrol, diesel, car oil and lubricants. exhaust gases must be vented out by placing the venting tubes over exhaust tail pipes.
scolding - many hot liquids to be working with, be careful when car is warmed up, as liquids like coolant, antifreeze, oil and lubricants will be  hot to touch. also beware that radiator fluid can burst when engine is warm.
crushing - never work under vehicles only being held up with jacks. vehicles jacked up must always be put on jack stands (at jacking points) when being worked under make sure that car hoists have up-to-date tags and do not show of any unsafe wear and tear. before moving under vehicle, lock the hoist into place by holding down the 'lock' button. the hoist should lock into place and stop moving. this safety feature is to prevent vehicle from dropping if wires fail to hold vehicle up.
fire - in case of fire, contact someone who is certified to use the fire extinguisher. in case of potentially harmful fire, press the fire drill button and evacuate to the car  park in front of main entrance.
electrocution - there are many electrical gadgets and equipment to be working with, if you think any electrical equipment will cause potential harm, press the 'emergency; button this will shut off the main power source. the emergency button can only be disabled with a key, which is held by a lecturer. if working on electrical in a vehicle, make sure the key is not in the ignition, and if you think the vehicle has potential to electrocute,  unplug the car battery to open all circuits. beware that when working in interior of car, SRS air bags may activate and cause injury. to prevent this, unplug the battery to open the circuit, or remove SRS airbag fuses.
The best difference we can make in terms of health and safety in the workshop is to have the right attitude and look out for each other. if you see somebody who needs a hand of help, don't eave the to cause potential harm to themselves and others
